Vassilis Yakoumis the greek dancer from Paros and Lesbos Islands - dancer
of zembekiko and ballos
Vassili's pure, poetic simplicity and his unique
artistic expression were blessed with light (Phos), grace and modesty. In spite
of many hardships, his was a journey of joyful, spiritual sensitivity and freedom.
He honoured the ancient land of his birth Mytilene (the island of Lesvos), with
celebrations of life through dance, with a deep respect for nature. He was a
caring, thoughtful friend with an honest, open heart, loved by us all for his
exceptional gift of gentle, loving- kindness and spontaneity. Just days before
he left us, I had a beautiful conversation with him, in which he was full of
love and gratitude for friendship and life. Vassilis came from Lesvos, the island
in the north Aegean. His family lived as wandering dancers, merchants and street
performers and as a child he toured Greece from fair to fair, dancing and selling
old kilims with his parents.
