GISELE APRODITI LUBSEN
Dutch photographer, Gisèle Aphroditi Lubsen, following successful shows at the Aegean Art Center Paroikia in 2006 and at Aghios Athanasios in Naoussa in 2007, will debut her latest show “Watermark” this summer during her residency at the Apothiki Gallery in Paroikia, Paros. Born in the Netherlands, Gisèle Lubsen has lived in Switzerland, France and the United States, but spent much of her upbringing on Paros. There she developed a strong emotional identity and a particular artistic sensibility born of the combined historical and mythological traditions of Greek culture and the influence of talented contemporary artists.
Using the medium of underwater photography to express a reality beyond the familiar earthly one, “Watermark” conceptually explores the iconography of Classical Greece through contemporary representation. In a unique blend of ancient and modern, Gisèle looks beyond traditional depictions of the past to present aspects of Greek mythology in a refreshingly new way. Her work evokes suspense and serenity and instills a desire for personal examination, encouraging us to explore the metamorphosis of the feminine psyche through the archetypes of Greek goddesses and to submerge our daily selves and reflect on the dichotomy of past and present.
“Watermark” consciously evokes our collective experience of island existence and of the timeless unity of life, death and rebirth and invites us to experience the essential nature of the element water.
The opening of “Watermark”, presenting Gisèle’s fascinating new photographs and a video installation, will take place at the Apothiki Gallery on Tuesday the 15th of July at 20:00. |
