Levantis Restaurant
I never fail be to utterly charmed by this delightful garden restaurant in the heart of the old town of Paroikia. Set in an ancient courtyard just a few steps off the market street, Levantis is one of the oldest restaurants on Paros. On entering, one is greeted by a friendly smile, the encouraging chinks of busy cutlery and the soft chimes of wine-glasses toasting a thoroughly enjoyed evening meal.
Once seated under the cool green canopy of the restaurant’s two hundred year old grapevine, a browse through the menu reveals a selection of dishes which though diverse, are all complemented by the warm flavours and fresh ingredients of the Levantine. Local produce and wild herbs ensure all the dishes have their place among the flavours and aromas of the island.
Fresh mussels with spicy sausage are delicately balanced with the heady aroma of ouzo, or a warm Fennel and Orange Risotto containing garlic and chilli prawns is joy in every fork-full. Inspired by the Moroccan tahgine, tender Honey Spiced Lamb with apples, prunes and almonds, is a host of flavours and textures in perfect harmony.
The salads are lovingly prepared, original and presented to tempt even the most hardened carnivore. Fennel & Pear Salad with mixed greens, aïoli croutons and parmesan shavings, freshens the pallet after a spicy entrée. Fish Ceviche and Grape Salad with avocado & lime is artfully concocted and devastatingly delicious.
The desserts are both tempting and rewarding, the Dark Chocolate Mocha Soufflé brings tears of gratitude to the eyes, Scoops of Lemon Sorbet with Roasted Figs and sweet wine are an idyllic combination. The White Chocolate and Amaretto Mousse with Sour Cherries melts blissfully on the tongue. For people like me who dine here frequently, chef, Giorgos Mavrides creates a daily special menu which is a tribute to his apparently limitless repertoire. Often with a cunningly blended soup, (be prompt, they sell out fast.), occasionally a delicate fish bought from the boats that morning, and a “Cake of the Day” which is also rarely around for long.
The wine list well researched and includes many of Greece’s finest. The inclination to have “Just one more bottle”, along with a warm and sophisticated ambience, makes Levantis a difficult place to leave.
